Fort Wayne Police Department Officers can be hired by third parties to perform the following police duties:
- Traffic control and pedestrian safety,
- Crowd control,
- Security and protection of life and property,
- Routine law enforcement for public authorities, and
- Plainclothes assignments.
This is called extra-duty employment. By filling out the below form, government, profit-making or not-for-profit entities may request to contract with the Patrolman's Benevolent Association and/or Fraternal Order of Police for purposes of hiring FWPDofficers for extra-duty employment.
To request hiring an officer or officers for extra-duty employment, please complete the following form. This request must be submitted at least one (1) week prior to the event.

If your event requires any of the following, it is considered a special event and must be approved by the Fort Wayne Public Works- Right of Way Office:

- Parade Permits (Not accessible through the online permitting process)
- Parking Lot Permits
- Pole Line Permits (required for New utility poles - including private or small cell tower within public right of way)
- Sidewalk Permits

Crime Prevention Programs

The Fort Wayne Police Department is committed to the safety of all who live, work or visit the city. In addition to proactive patrols throughout the city, the Department also participates in numerous crime prevention programs and has developed unique initiatives to educate and inform the public. All programs are FREE. Listed below are the programs currently being offered to businesses/residents/associations. For questions, please call the Crime Prevention line at: 260-427-5999.
The Department requires at least a 4-week notice for any request submitted via the online form.
Please note: Filling out this form is the first step in requesting a Crime Prevention Officer. Your request is not finalized until you receive confirmation from the department.

Business Security Surveys
The FWPD's Crime Prevention Unit offers FREE Business Security Surveys to businesses within the city limits of Fort Wayne. The business security survey provides an assessment of possible crime risks to your business, and recommends steps for improvement. If you're interested in a business security survey, fill out the Submit Request form above to contact one of our Crime Prevention Specialists. Note: This is not the same as a security check, in which officers conduct random security checks of your property while you are away.

Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED)
Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) theories contend that law enforcement officers, architects, city planners, landscape designers, interior designers, and resident volunteers can create a climate of safety in a community right from the start. CPTED’s goal is to prevent crime by designing a physical environment that positively influences human behavior. The theory is based on four principles: natural access control, natural surveillance, territoriality, and maintenance. Crime Prevention Specialists conduct CPTED surveys as a courtesy to businesses and citizens within the city limits of Fort Wayne. Robbery Prevention and Safety Presentations for Businesses
Our Crime Prevention Specialists are constantly working to establish new partnerships with businesses within the city limits of Fort Wayne. Partnerships between law enforcement, residents, and businesses make our communities safer places to live, work, and play. As such, our Crime Prevention Specialists offer robbery prevention surveys to businesses as a courtesy. Crime Prevention Specialists are also available to provide crime prevention presentations to employees of your business. Honor Guard & Color Guard

The Fort Wayne Police Department Honor and Color Guard represents the department at various public ceremonies and private functions. These officers are selected from members of the department and are highly trained in ceremonial duties.
The department requires at least a 2-week notice for any request submitted via the online form. If your request time is shorter than 2-weeks please contact us directly to check on officer availability.

Pipe & Drum Brigade

The Fort Wayne Police Department Pipe and Drum Corps is a group of talented officers that often perform in conjunction with the Honor Guard at various functions and ceremonies. They are highly professional and are often requested to perform by outside agencies.

REPORTING A LOST OR STOLEN ITEM:
- It is recommended that you call FWPD’s teleservice line at 260-427-1340 to file a report. Please include detailed information to expedite finding the owner and return of property.
SUBMITTING LOST ITEM TO POLICE DEPARTMENT:
- If you find a lost item within Fort Wayne city limits and would like to submit to the Fort Wayne Police Department, please call 260-427-1340.
Found items can be retrieved, by appointment only, from the FWPD Property Room-Monday through Friday, 8:00 am-6:00 p.m. Please call 260-427-2034 to schedule an appointment. Per Indiana state law, found items are held at the police department for 30 days before disposal. Items that have a value of $100 or more are sent to online auction.
Prior to coming to the police department to claim a lost item you must have the following items to show proof of ownership and identification:
- A valid state issued photo ID
- Proof of Ownership (at least one below):
- Police report number
- Purchase receipt
- Description of item in detail
- Photograph that shows possession of lost item
