How to obtain a police report

Community Outreach

The mission of the Community Relations Division is to bring the police department and the community together to facilitate a better understanding of what the department does through the organizing of events in collaboration with other specialty teams and their equipment.The FWPD supports community-oriented policing strategies. The main idea behind this strategy is to allow police to feel like the public can trust them.

The Community Relations Division is comprised of following areas. For full details on each area please use the menu to the upper left.

  • School Resource Office (SRO)

These areas are staffed with (11) officers to include the division commander, a captain, (2) sergeants, (6) SROs, a safety village officer, and the liaison officer. All of the personnel are important in relating a positive message to the community in areas of enforcement, safety and community involvement.

Internal Affairs

It is the mission of this office to assist the Chief of Police in preserving the integrity of the Fort Wayne Police Department by facilitating the highest level of organizational performance and service to the community. The Internal Affairs Unit is responsible for coordinating and exercising supervision over investigations of complaints of allegations of misconduct against members of the Fort Wayne Police Department.

How to File a Complaint

The Internal Affairs Division investigates allegations of violations of the Rules and Regulations and/or Policies and Procedures of the Fort Wayne Police Department.

In order to file a complaint a Citizen’s Complaint form must be completed and signed by the complaining party.

Completed forms can be dropped off  or mailed to the Fort Wayne Police Department. A copy of the Citizen’s Complaint form (English and Spanish versions) is available to be downloaded. If you have a complaint, please print off the version of the form and complete all sections. Be as descriptive as possible. If additional space is needed use an additional sheet of paper and continue the narrative on that, but remember to sign the original form in the space provided.

Towed Vehicle Information

Vehicle releases can be obtained at the Police Desk.

  • Vehicles are released to the registered owner: If plates are valid and registered to the owner, then a valid state issued ID or driver’s license is required to obtain the release form.  If plates are more than 30 days expired, then a valid title along with valid photo ID are required for the release or updated plates and registration from the BMV.  If the registered owner resides in another state or several hours away or is out of town, a notarized letter giving permission to someone to obtain the vehicle release- including all vehicle information (year, make, model, and VIN number) is required.  A police photo or mug shot can be used on a release of a vehicle- in the case of a recent OWI arrest.  If the registered owner is medically unable to obtain the vehicle, a notarized statement is required or valid POA paperwork that includes information regarding said vehicle.  If the registered owner is deceased, a copy of the death certificate listing next of kin and paperwork naming the executor of the deceased’s estate is required.  In all circumstances a valid photo ID is required.   An expired ID is considered invalid.

  • Vehicles released to the lien holder will need the following: Title stating who is the lien holder, a completed application for title (ready to be taken to the BMV), BMV repossession paperwork   (ready to be taken to the BMV), a hold harmless agreement (signed by representative of financial inst.), proof owner is behind on payments (payment log), copy of letter or any type of paperwork notifying owner they are in default, letter authorizing driver of transport company to sign & pick up vehicle/or a rep from financial company. Driver must also have valid ID and/or proof he is representing the transport company.
