 Candidate Orientation Guide (Optional):B

Applicants may order the “NPST-R Candidate Orientation Guide” by clicking the following link:  Candidate Orientation Guide . The guide will cover the whole test which will include the practice test questions.

The NPST_R Candidate Orientation Guide can be downloaded as a PDF file and saved or printed. Please read through the disclaimer page in order to have a successful download.  There will be an option to pay with a PayPal account or as a PayPal guest with a debit/credit card. The download link will be located on the Order Details-Checkout Status page once payment is submitted and PayPal redirects the process back to the FPSI site. 

Applicants must pay close attention to ALL instructions on both FPSI and PayPal’s websites in order to download any guide properly.

 Selection Process Overview:

The selection process for all candidates includes the successful completion of:

  • An application for employment with the City of Fort Wayne’s Human Resources Department.
  • A written examination.
  • A physical ability test.

                          

  • An oral interview with a panel comprised of citizens in the Fort Wayne community and two members of the Fort Wayne Police Department
  • A comprehensive background investigation — including two voice stress analysis exams in order to determine truthfulness in the following areas: criminal history drugs, morality, and honesty
  • Psychological testing
  • A conditional offer of employment
  • A physical examination (cost shared equally between City and applicant)
  • A review with the Local Police Pension Board
  • An oral interview with the Board of Public Safety
  • State of Indiana Police Pension Board Review

(The above eleven-step process takes approximately six months from the last day applications are
accepted.)

  • Basic police academy curriculum (21 weeks)
  • Field Training Officer Program (six months)
  • Unsupervised Probationary status (additional six months)

2022 Annual Gross

  • 1st year: $59,529.42
  • 2nd year: $66,143.81

2023 Annual Gross

  • 1st year: $62,505.90
  • 2nd year: $69,451.00

2024 Annual Gross

  • 1st year: $65,630.00
  • 2nd year: $72,923.55
- 2nd shift bonus: $3,300
- 3rd shift bonus: $6,600

- Uniform allowance: All initial uniforms and equipment furnished at time of hire, including body armor and weapon
- FWPD has a take home vehicle program
 Basic Recruit Applicant Testing Process:

Once the application process is completed, applicants will then move into the testing process which consists of (9) steps. Each step must be successfully completed before an applicant can move to the next phase of the testing process.

  • Written Test
  • Physical Fitness Test (see videos above for helpful tips)
    – Sit-ups: 25 (in one minute or less)
    – Push-ups: 21 (“male-style” without stopping )
    – Vertical jump: 14 inches (three attempts allowed)
    – 300 Meter Run: 82 seconds (or less)
    – 1 1/2 Mile Run: 17 minutes and 30 seconds (or less)
    Fitness Standards increase prior to exit of the Basic Recruit Class
  • Oral Interview
  • Background Investigation
  • Voice Stress Test
  • Psychological Testing
  • Medical Examination
  • PERF Board
Minimum Requirements:
  • Successfully complete pre-employment physical fitness test. (see videos above for helpful tips)
  • 21-39 years of age at time of appointment.
  • U.S. Citizen.
  • High School Diploma, the equivalent, or a G.E.D.; education beyond high school preferred.
  • Correctable vision to 20-30 in each eye.
  • Current valid driver’s license.
  • Physically and mentally able to perform essential job functions of the patrol officer position.

Employment Standards for Lateral Transfers:
  • Must already be a sworn/certified police officer. No minimum years of experience is necessary.
  • Successfully complete pre-employment physical fitness test.(see videos above for helpful tips)
    • Physical Fitness Test
      – Sit-ups: 29 (in one minute or less)
      – Push-ups: 25 (“male-style” without stopping )
      – Vertical jump: 16 inches (three attempts allowed)
      – 300 Meter Run: 71 seconds (or less)
      – 1 1/2 Mile Run: 16 minutes and 28 seconds (or less)
  • 21-39 years of age at time of appointment. Applicants can be older than 39 if already enrolled in PERF (Public Employees Retirement Fund).
  • U.S. Citizen.
  • High School Diploma, the equivalent, or a G.E.D.; education beyond high school preferred.
  • Correctable vision to 20-30 in each eye.
  • Current valid driver’s license.
  • Physically and mentally able to perform essential job functions of the patrol officer position.
