Shots Fired Investigation

July 4, 2017

For Immediate Release

Date:  July 4, 2017

Time: 11:25pm

Location: 1400 St Joseph Blvd

On July 4, 2017, at approximately 11:25hrs, Officers with the Fort Wayne Police Department were in the area of the 1400 block of St Joseph Blvd on an investigation. Those officers heard gunshots coming from the rear alley of the 1400 block of St Joseph Blvd. As the officers approached the area to investigate, a person or persons began shooting at the officers from the upstairs of a residence in the 1400 block of St Joseph Blvd. At least one of the officers returned fire in defense of himself and the others, as they all took up a position of safety.

Multiple other officers responded to assist, and began setting up a perimeter, while the Emergency Services Team and Crisis Response Team were paged out. EST and CRT officers began trying to make contact with the suspect(s), evacuating surrounding residences in the process. Eventually, EST members deployed tear gas in an attempt to motivate the suspect(s) to surrender.

After hours of loud hailing for the suspect(s) to surrender, and receiving no response, the Emergency Services Team made entry, but did not locate anyone inside the apartment, indicating that the suspect(s) was able to escape before the initial perimeter was established.

No injuries were reported.

At this time, no suspect information is available. Anyone who may have witnesses the incident, or who may have knowledge of the suspect, will be interviewed by police. Investigators are searching the residence for evidence.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact police. The incident remains under investigation by the Fort Wayne Police Department and the Allen County Prosecutor’s Office.
