Barricaded Subject\Hostage Situation
Date/Time of Incident: November, 10 2012 at 3:22 hours
Location of Incident: 800 W. Jefferson
Victims: 1. Adult female, 22 years old
2. Female Juvenile, 4 years old
3. Male Juvenile, 1 year old
Arrested : Ryan Andrew Baughman, age 23, Fort Wayne
Charges: 1. Domestic Battery with Children Present (Felony)
2. Domestic Battery (misdemeanor)
Fort Wayne, Ind. - Officers of the Fort Wayne Police Department responded to the 800 block of W. Jefferson in reference to a domestic violence call. Responding officers made contact with the female adult victim. It was reported that Baughman and the adult victim had been involved in a heated domestic dispute. The suspect was reported to be under the influence of alcohol and prescription drugs. During the incident, it was reported to the police that the suspect had grabbed a semi-automatic handgun and threatened the victim. The female victim then fled the residence and contacted the police. The female victim had minor injuries.
Officers were not able to make contact with the suspect who was inside of the mutli-family residence. The door to this residence was locked. The Fort Wayne Police Department Emergency Services Team and the Crisis Response Team were called to the scene. The Crisis Response Team made numerous attempts to contact the suspect by multiple means of communication. The Crisis Response Team was not able to make contact with the suspect. Just after 6:00 a.m., officers of the Emergency Services Team forced entry into the apartment with the use of a directed explosive charge. This controlled charged allowed for rapid access to the residence and the suspect was quickly taken into custody. At the time that Baughman was taken into custody, he was armed with a semi-automatic handgun and two (2) additional loaded magazines of ammunition. The two children were found to be sleeping in the next room and were returned safely to their mother. There are no reported injures as a result of the forced entry into the apartment.
Traffic on W. Jefferson between Main and Van Buren was tied up for over three (3) hours.
The incident remains under investigation with the City of Fort Wayne Police Department, and the Allen County Prosecuting Attorney's Office.
