Department Investigating Rash of Motorcycle Thefts

Fort Wayne, Ind. – The City of Fort Wayne Police Department is alerting motorcycle owners of a recent spike in motorcycle thefts.  In the last two months, eighteen motorcycles have been reported stolen.  With the exception of one, all motorcycles reported stolen are by Japanese manufacturers: Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, and Yamaha.  These units are categorized as sport bikes or more commonly known as ‘crotch rockets’.  At the time of the theft, the motorcycles were reported to be parked either on the street or driveway of the victim’s home, and more recently in the parking lot of some apartment complexes.  Victims are also reporting that at the time of the theft, fork locks or other locking devices were in place.  These thefts are occurring in the overnight hours, and it is believed that these units are being lifted or loaded into a vehicle or trailer.  At this time, there is no suspect information, though it is believed that the majority of these incidents are related.

Motorcycle owners are encouraged to park their motorcycle units in a secure garage, or in well-lit areas.  Another option is to invest in a chain lock and secure your motorcycle to a fixed object, or to invest in an alarm system.

Anyone with information about this recent rash of motorcycle thefts is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at (260) 436-7867 (STOP) where a cash reward is possible for information received.  These incidents remain under investigation with the City of Fort Wayne Police Department and the Allen County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
