Fatal Automobile Accident, Bicyclist Struck
On Friday, November 11, 2011 at 6:10 p.m., the Fort Wayne Police Department responded to the 3000 block of N. Clinton Street reference a report of a personal injury automobile accident involving a bicyclist. It was further reported that a physician was on the scene and was performing CPR. The victim was transported from the scene to a local hospital in critical condition where he later died. The victim's identity to be released by the Allen County Coroner's Office pending family notification.
Preliminary investigation indicates that the victim was with two other bicyclists and that the three were crossing at the 3000 block of N. Clinton Street, from the west side to the east side, when the victim was struck by a tan-colored Cadillac traveling southbound on N. Clinton Street. There is not an intersection in this particular stretch of N. Clinton Street, and there are four lanes of traffic (two northbound, and two southbound). None of the three bicyclists were wearing helmets, nor were they wearing light-colored or reflective clothing. No other injuries were reported at the scene. The driver of the vehicle was transported to a local hospital for a blood draw, which is standard procedure in this type of investigation.
This incident continues to be investigated by the Fatal Alcohol Crash Team, the Allen County Coroner's Office, and the Allen County Prosecuting Attorney's Office.
