Fatal Crash Investigation

Date/Time of Incident: 09/02/2011

Location of Incident: 7200 West Jefferson

Driver: Andrew J Walter, age 36, Fort Wayne, preliminarily charged with OWI causing serious bodily injury

Bicyclist: Male Adult, Fort Wayne, Critical Condition (Identity pending family notification)

At 2:40 am, Officers of the Fort Wayne Police Department responded to the 7200 block of West Jefferson Blvd. on a 'man down' call. Once on scene Officers found a bicyclist in the west bound lanes of West Jefferson Blvd. who appeared to have injuries consistent with being struck by a vehicle, but no vehicle was at the scene.  The incident appeared to be a hit-and-run accident.

Medics arrived and transported the victim to a local hospital in critical condition. The F.A.C.T. team was paged in and took over the investigation. A short time later a male subject called 911 saying he thought he hit something on his way home this morning. Officers went to the man's home and were able to determine that the damage on his truck was consistent with the damage to the bicycle. At this time, investigators believe that the bicyclist was traveling west bound on West Jefferson Blvd. in the center of the northern most lane when a black Equinox struck him from the rear and left the scene.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor with both the driver and the bicyclist.

The bicyclist remains at a local hospital in critical condition.  This case remains under investigation by the Fort Wayne Police Department, The Allen County Prosecutor's Office and the Allen County Coroners Office.
