On Monday, January 23, 2012 at approximately 1:09 pm the City of Fort
Wayne Police Department responded to 5303 Wheelock Road, Jefferson
Middle School, reference a physical altercation between two students.
During the course of the investigation, the responding officer (School
Resource Officer) and school officials learned that there might be a
weapon on the school's premises. During a subsequent search, a handgun
was discovered in a school restroom. There were three bullets in the magazine
of the gun and a bullet in the chamber; the gun was 'loaded'.
Three students, all reported to be eighth-grade students at the school,
were detained and later transported to the Allen County Juvenile Center
in connection to this incident:
1) Male, age 13. Charges: Possession of a Handgun on School Property,
Possession of a Handgun Without a Permit, Battery, and Disorderly
Conduct;
2) Male, age14. Charges: Possession of a Handgun on School Property,
and Possession of a Handgun Without a Permit;
3) Male, age 13. Charges: Disorderly Conduct;
It was further reported during the investigation that the student brought the weapon to the school because he had made arrangments to sell it.
This incident remains under investigation by the Juvenile Aid Division
of the City of Fort Wayne Police Department and the Allen County
Prosecuting Attorney's office. There is nothing further at this time.
