Post Riding With An Officer
What would an officer visiting from Europe need to do in order to ride along with a FWPD officer for a shift? I read that ride alongs by invitation only. Would this apply when the requester himself is a police officer?

Dear Guggenheim,

Thank you for your interest in the City of Fort Wayne Police Department. Our ride-along program was suspended in 2009 because we could not accommodate the large volume of requests to ride with an officer. At this time, considerations are made for family members and friends of officers. It has long been recognized that the support of family members and friends is crucial for law enforcement officers in developing strategies to handle stress, and this is one way that the department is able to encourage that support system.

The ride-along experience itself is very valuable. During followup conversations, riders have similar reports - having a greater appreciation for law enforcement and the role of the law enforcement officer in the community, and having a greater understanding of the 'how' and the 'why' with regards to law enforcement officers and the way they perform their duties.

I hope that the program can resume again in the future.

Thank you again, and Godspeed, Guggenheim.
