Selection Process

The selection process for all candidates includes the successful completion of:

  • An application for employment with the City of Fort Wayne's Human Resources Department

  • A physical ability test.

  • A written examination.

  • An oral interview with a panel comprised of citizens in the Fort Wayne community and two members of the Fort Wayne Police Department

  • A comprehensive background investigation — including two voice stress analysis exams in order to determine truthfulness in the following areas: criminal history drugs, morality, and honesty

  • Psychological testing

  • A conditional offer of employment

  • A physical examination (cost shared equally between City and applicant)

  • An review with the Local Police Pension Board

  • An oral interview with the Board of Public Safety

  • State of Indiana Police Pension Board Review

      (The above eleven-step process takes approximately six months from the last day applications are accepted.)

  • Basic police academy curriculum

  • Field Training Officer Program (six months)

  • Unsupervised Probationary status (additional six months)
