Barricade/Warrant Suspect Arrest

Date:          Friday, August 4, 2017

Time:          3:00 p.m.

Location:    4435 Warsaw Street

Arrested:    Elijah Jamal Swopshire M/22

Fort Wayne

A detective with the Fort Wayne Police Department’s Gang and Violent Crimes Unit attempted to make a traffic stop on a vehicle being driven by the above listed suspect, Elijah Swopshire at approximately 3:00 p.m. this afternoon. Swopshire fled from the detective resulting in a short vehicle pursuit. Swopshire eventually bailed from his vehicle and fled from officers on foot eventually entering a home located at 4435 Warsaw Street.

Officers were unsuccessful in coaxing Swopshire from the home and the departments EST and CRT teams were called in to manage the investigation. There were three occupants in the home when Swopshire entered, an adult female and her two children. They were able to exit the home immediately upon him entering. Several attempts were made at getting Swopshire to exit the home but those attempts were unsuccessful. EST eventually introduced a chemical agent into the home which after several minutes resulted in Swopshire exiting the home running from officers for a short distance before being apprehended. Swopshire was taken to a local hospital for medical clearance before being booked in the Allen County Jail on his existing warrant and the additional charges brought against him for resisting.

This incident was handled by the Fort Wayne Police Department and the Allen County Prosecutor’s office.
